Dimensioning ORIMA® Snow guards

When designing and dimensioning the snow guards, it's important to take into account the roof slope, shape and pitch and the basic snow loads in the building area.

Long slopes sometimes require installing several rows of snow guards for the slope’s running length.

Dimensioning Snow guards

The Snow guard must always be installed for the full length of the roof.

The guard installation point is chosen so that the snow guard line follows the house’s wall line, some other load bearing structure, or is installed higher up. If the snow guard line is installed closer to the eaves, sufficient load bearing capacity of the structures must be ensured.

All Orima® Snow guards have a maximum spacing of snow guard fixings of 1.2 m.  The Snow guards are dimensioned to withstand a load of 500 kg (5 kN/m) per one metre.

OIKEA CORRECT DIMENSIONING FOR THE LENGTH

Orima_lumieste_koko_katon_mitalla_400px.jpg

  • Snow load is distributed evenly
  • Protects from snow damage for the entire roof and length of the house.

Guards are used to prevent snow from falling down onto the slope below.

DO NOT USE A SHORT SNOW GUARD

An overload may cause

  • serious structural damage
  • personal injury.

The outer fixings carry the most of the snow mass weight and the load can grow to four times the dimensioned load, up to 2000 kg per fixing.

HOW MANY SNOW GUARD LINES?

Long slopes sometimes require installing several rows of snow guards for the slope’s running length. Check the dimensioning in the table per roof pitch and the basic snow load in your area.

Basic snow loads per region in Europe:
EN 1991.1.3 ANNEX C.

For example:

Roof pitch is 1:1,5 (about 33 degrees). The basic snow load in your region is 2 kN/m². Distance between snow guard and ridge a maximum of 6.8 m.

If the slope is longer, add another row of guards to the midway of slope. In this case the distance between guard rows must not exceed the same 6.8 m.

Orima® Snow guards with fixings are dimensioned according to the SS 831335:2014 standard for a snow load of 5 kN/m.

IIf the regional snow load on the roof is exceeded, the excess snow must be removed. Excessive snow loads on roofs may cause the roof safety products to come off and damage the roof structures. The owner of the property must follow closely the regional snow load situation and remove excess snow accordingly. If possible, snow removal should always be done by professionals.
